Our festival uses billboards in an innovative way. We change their function and use them NOT to present advertisements, but moving and thought-provoking art. We take our species name – Homo sapiens / Thinking man– very seriously. Therefore, we put great emphasis on deepened thinking, reflection and awareness rising. Thinking is very closely related to us, people. When we change our thinking, deepen our awareness and initiate our reflection, we also change the reality we live in.

Our festival encourages both artists and audience to take a good look at themselves and the surrounding reality, for currently, together with rapid economic, social and technological changes, the old system is fading away and the new one has not been clarified yet. So, it is worth considering: what is our point, what is important for us, what do we want our relationships look like? What shape should communities have to allow us to develop and live our own and truly satisfying life?

People invented art thousands of years ago. It appeared together with a wonderful feature of the human brain – abstract thinking. Our ancestors were painting on the cave walls to understand themselves and the reality they were living in. We do the same, using contemporary “walls” that are characteristic for our urban landscape. We use both standard billboards, enormous mega-billboards, mobile billboards and electronic street screens.

We are changing ourselves individually, but being members of communities we influence their shape. Minor communities influence the bigger ones and this way the whole world… is changing.

Artists are invited to prepare an artwork (maximum three pieces) in response to this year’s competition theme Under pressure. How to be yourself in the contemporary oppressive world?

This competition slogan can be treated as a metaphor of all the processes taking place in the world today. We live under constant pressure: of time, perfection, success, exorbitant requirements. Different pressure groups – politicians, media, corporations, fundamentalists, radicals – exert pressure on us. However, not only they – we also exert pressure on ourselves. Omnipresent pressure and chaos of contradictory messages we receive intensify our fear. Our internal pressure is growing – it tells us to constantly raise the bar, work more and faster, live more intensely. The pressure never stops – we experience it from the cradle to the grave. How to be yourself in such a situation? The advertising message we are bombarded with tells us: be yourself and at the same time be like others and choose this or that product. Is it possible to be yourself and like others at the same time? What does it mean to be yourself? Is it worth being yourself – the only one, unique human being? How to do it in the contemporary oppressive world?

There is no entry fee.

The format of the competition work should be 498 cm x 243 cm (196 inches x 95.7 inches) in a horizontal layout, 100 dpi, cmyk, tiff.

Main Award - PLN 5.000

The WAC Awards is an open competition for contemporary visual art that is gaining praise and respect in Britain and abroad. It was established five years ago by a group of artists and their friends in Wells, the beautiful cathedral city in the South-West of England. But an idea that came to life around kitchen and dining tables has already established a strong presence in the London art world and is drawing artists from places as diverse as Australia, Azerbaijan, India, Italy, Korea, Japan and the United States, as well as all over Britain. The most frequently cited reasons for this rapid success are the quality of the artists who enter, the prestige of the selectors and judges and the attraction of the prizes.

Up to 3 works may be submitted, the entry fee is £16 per work (£12 for current students).

Entries for 2016 can be any medium - painting, sculpture, drawing, photography, installation or video. There are no size restrictions.

We regret that we cannot exhibit digital work unless all necessary equipment is provided by the artist (for example: monitors, screens, DVD players, headphones etc)

Prizes:

The 45 Park Lane Art Prize gives the overall winner a 10-day solo exhibition in London, including an opening night reception/private view and an overnight stay at 45 Park Lane Hotel, in Mayfair, London. In addition, WAC will provide the winner with £1000 to cover exhibition costs.

This year’s theme has been influenced by the social impacts of urbanisation which affects our lifestyle - in the homes we live in, the cars we drive, the furniture we own, and the sports we engage in. The question to be answered is what role can design and innovation play to ensure that we are prepared and equipped for this social adaptation?

As such, we are inviting creative minds to draw inspiration from our materials and submit innovative design ideas that address the complex challenges and opportunities of urban living. Submissions can range from consumer items (furniture, footwear, apparel, etc) to industrial products (medical devices, construction equipment, etc) or any object that can help societies realise their aspiration of healthier, smarter and sustainable living.

Applicants are encouraged to submit innovative designs and unique interpretations that are true to the essence of the theme. You will have to submit ideas using at least one material featured in the material kit.
