Art conference

Deadline: 31 March 2020

The fourth international conference "Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art & Science" will take place November 26–28, 2020, in Austria, hosted by the University of Applied Arts Vienna. Including theoretical and art practice presentations, TTT2020 continues to focus (a) on questions about the nature of the forbidden and aesthetics of liminality as expressed in art that uses or is
inspired by technology and science, and (b) on the opening of spaces for creative transformation in the merging of science and art.

Submissions are welcome from all art and research fields and cutting-edge technology in arts-based research. Suggested, but not exclusive topics, are those associated with: Biopunk, hybridity and aesthetics of mutation; Cyborg, augmentation and bοdy modification; Post-gender, transgressive identities and social models; Psychopharmacology, somatechnology, and post-humanism; Chemistry of the mind, natural healers, and mind enhancement; Biotechnology, DIYbio, and biohacking; Ethology, human and nonhuman; Evolution, genetics, and extended evolutionary synthesis; Cyber-eroticism, sex technology, and techno-lust; Biopolitics, displacement, and resistance.

Taboo - Transgression - Transcendence in Art & Science reminds applicants that this conference was formed with the intention to allow for non-restrictive topics and discussions. TTT expects authors to delve into the most obscure, pathological, visionary and/or licentious lines of questioning. So if you have topics that touch on the deepest taboos in art and technology studies, transgressions to reveal that cause seismic activity on the fault-lines of the art and science divide, or even seemingly unmentionable, cultish, transcendental SciArt visions to impart upon us, then this is the venue to allow those novel subterranean and of the beyond whispers come out loud. TTT2020 offers a platform to engage in an openly liminal discussion. This is your chance to present concepts deemed: difficult, un-sutured, challenging, giddy, tawdry, festering, elated, illuminated, libidinal, queer, unpalatable, convulsive, feral and mutagenic. Please let TTT be an echo chamber of fearless ideation and know that this is a space for free range concepts and raw cognition unencumbered by topical limits.

The conference language is English. Proposals are submitted for consideration to the members of the scientific and artistic committee.

Manifesting Rules
Rules and regulations may limit creativity – on the other hand, they can be liberating, especially in times of seemingly endless possibilities. Show us which formal and content-related rules you personally act on – and which ones you think should definitely be broken.

A maximum of three entries per person is permitted.

Already published works and plagiarisms are excluded from participation.

The competition is open to everyone younger than 27.

Online and offline exhibition

Deadline: 31 July 2019

the wrong is the largest and most comprehensive biennale celebrating digital art today. a global event open to participation, aiming to nurture digital culture.

the wrong happens both online and offline.

the online happens in “pavilions”; virtual curated spaces in any online accessible media where selected artworks are exhibited.

the offline happens in “embassies”; institutions, art spaces, galleries and artist run spaces in cities around the world.

This Open Call invites artists to show their work in the What Do We Do Now? online Pavilion and offline Embassy, between 1 November 2019 and 1 March 2020.

For this call, we look at
energy
dataflow, optic signals,
stable systems, destabilised systems,
digital colonialism,
Imbalance, impermanence,
the intersection between the tangible and the virtual.

We are looking for works that can be shown both online and offline and that respond to some aspects of the following writing:

“Our increasingly electrified, electronic, and data-driven society places steadily rising demand on reliable baseload power - that is, on electricity available 24/7/365. Servers never sleep, nor does air conditioning during hot nights, and in Asia's megacities, subways and electric trains take only brief naps between midnight and 5 A.M.” Vaclav Smil

Crypto mining hubs are appearing in Arctic regions where energy is cheap and the ambient air temperature cools down servers. To mine the virtual pirate gold non-stop, without letting machines rest, one must consider the energy-intensive processes that occur in the background. At the other end of the continent, the southern crypto havens have been increasing their fibre internet connection speeds to attract the new digital colonial settlers and their energy consuming activities. They keep laying new underwater cables to increase connectivity, to ensure digital security and a stable growth. Crypto haven economies depend on light signals passing through a one-inch-wide fibre cable, which adds a vulnerability to the whole venture. The tangible meets the virtual in our decaying bodies. We fight against this decay with a gym membership or DIY bicycle-powered PCs. What happens to the body when we are engrossed in the virtual? Does time pass differently for our bodies when our minds are active in cyberspace? The energy consuming cyber exchange is also occurring in our bodies, where every interaction we have online slowly drains our resources. Maybe being able to upload our energy (our “self”) to the cloud is not such a bad idea, if that means that we can stop battling our physical decay?

#energy #data #crypto #cryptomining #digitalcolonialism #climatemergency #sun #sea #air #airconditioning #elements #glass #fibre #light #rust #humidity #deterioration #connectivity #body #embodiment

Call for entries for 2019 summer art exhibition

Deadline: 21st July 2019

The theme for eighthwonder 2019 is Muse

All artwork mediums are accepted including performance, film and sound installation.

“The muses are ghosts, and sometimes they come uninvited.” – Stephen King, Bag of Bones

Gracing the walls of gallery spaces, offices and households, typically it is the finished artwork that engages the audience. However, what is it that comes before that?

Since ancient times, artists have spoken about their need for inspiration, to find the spark that stokes their creative flame.

But who or what sparks artists today?

What is your inspiration? How do you start your creative process? What is your muse?

To be presented as a finished artwork, this open call invites you to express your influences and motivations - and to show the world what it is that inspires you. In turn, you could become the muse that inspires visitors to respond creatively, perhaps producing their own artwork.

Entry fee:
No entry fee

Gallery fee for each artwork accepted into the show.
1 x artwork = £10.  2 x artworks = £15.  3 x artworks = £20.  4 x artworks = £25.
