Summer school for architects, designers and filmmakers

The summer school "Hjemme i Skagen / At Home in Skagen" is a week's intensive workshop with a focus on the town's architecture and a special focus on spatial design within the homes of Skagen.

The home is orchestrated and spoken of as never before in the media. But what is a home in a small Danish town and what does it mean to be at home in Skagen? Together we will explore ten homes in Skagen and add our own spatial interventions to emphasize our findings of what exactly makes these buildings and rooms a home.


Participants will work individually or in groups to sketch, map, create installations, spatial interventions and short films.

WORKSHOP // To kick off the workshop week we will experience the architectural history of Skagen on bikes and briefly discuss conservation, tradition and renewal with local architects. Professor of anthropology Kirsten Marie Raahauge will introduce the participants to the cultural background of the “home”. What is a home and what does it mean to be a home in Skagen? Each participant will be invited inside a home. From an apartment in Mosegården to a villa on Østre Strandvej. A rowhouse on Hans Baghs vej to a detached house in the ’Bird neighborhood’. Ten examples of homes in Skagen created in the city's various architecture and filled with a personal interior by families with different backgrounds and everyday life. Small and large homes, new and old homes, home to the many, home to the few. Where are we at home and how do we create a home? Guided by designer Tine Kjølsen participants will investigate this and more in the specific homes through fieldwork, mapping exercises and conversations with the families.

Hereafter the participants will each build a design object that will focus on the homeliness of each home under the guidance of architect Isabel Ahm and cabinet maker Signe Lund. Everyone will have to understand the architecture of the building, the personal decor and the family's background and everyday life in order to produce a physical object that represents the essence of the home, it can be a piece of furniture, a small design object, a decorative item or something else that emphasizes what exactly makes this building or these rooms a home.

FILMS // The projects will be documented as short films, and the films will be shown in a combined program in the cinema at Kulturhuset in Skagen at a free premiere - open to all. Afterwards the films together with the design objects will be exhibited in the small building at Banegårdspladsen in Skagen for two months and will be published online at the association’s website and other relevant platforms such as Architecture Player.

As well as for connecting and experimenting with other writers & artists, the residency can be used for concentrating intensively on your ongoing work/research, starting a brand new project, or stopping to contemplate your practice and being. The KHB's Artist-in-Residence Programme in collaboration with the Institute for Rural Beauty (ILS) aims to research two aspects: on the one hand, it aims to research, reflect and make visible the term "minimal travelling". On the other hand, the focus will be on formats that test playing/experimenting with community. ILS invites experimental artists*, who react site-specifically in their performative/participative artistic research practice and search for an environment that they can share with others.


The competition is aimed at professionally trained or self-appointed artists* of all ages. Team applications up to 2 persons are possible, if living / working space is shared. Networking is important to us, therefore knowledge of the German language is an advantage.

Terra Vivente has three residency opportunities now accepting applications. Started in 2013, Terra Vivente is a somewhat nomadic artist residency that runs in Italy in the summer months only. The three programs are in carefully chosen locations, where Terra Vivente has liaised with other arts organizations, such as IVYnode in Sardinia, NAHR (Nature, Art and Habitat Residency)in the north of Italy and Ru.De.Ri in the south, as well as connecting with the municipalities. Accommodation is in houses, to be shared only with one or two other artists (private bedrooms), not hotels or hostels. The first residency, June 3-24, is in Sardinia, with an optional but fully funded symposium, May 31-June 2. Then it moves to the Taleggio Valley in the north, near Bergamo for 4 weeks in July. In August, the residency is in the Matese mountains of Campania. All three are set in small villages with unique studios--a convent, an eco-museum or a schoolhouse. The residencies are only partially subsidiized.

There is a fee to participate: 850-900 Euros covers the cost of accommodation, some transportation, use of the studio and the exhibition. Artists must cover the cost of their own art supplies, food and transportation. The studio does its best to support projects, providing guidance in acquiring materials, seeking information, making connections within the community.

72 Hour Urban Action is the world's first real-time architectural competition where international teams design, build, sleep and party together to generate public interventions in a limited space within a short time and on a tight budget.

It will take place in May 2-5 2019 and will challenge local residents and international participants to collaboratively create public spaces in the district.

ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

-Suggested dates of residency are May through October 2019.
-RU will cover round trip airfare costs to Belgrade from wherever the winning artist is located.
-RU will cover the accommodation expenses on site in Gola Glava and in the center of Belgrade.
-The artist will receive a $300 stipend.
-In Gola Glava, the artist will live and work for 3 weeks in an authentic Serbian house in the countryside surrounded by a beautiful garden and a pool.
-Besides free accommodation, food expenses will be covered with access to the organic garden and fresh spring water.
-The finalist will be offered a public program at REMONT Gallery to present his/her/their practice to representatives of Belgrade's vibrant contemporary art scene.

We are looking for contemporary practitioners that will demonstrate a
genuine interest in the social context of Athens and who can engage with
it critically by challenging social norms and taboos.
We are looking for creative practitioners who will be open to collaborate,
work with other artists and curators.
Snehta candidates should demonstrate an interest in the local community
of Kypseli or more widely towards other communities based in the city.
We are interested in artists who are driven by a research-based and
explorative approach, and who will engage playfully and creatively with
the city.
We will take artists on board who believe in Art as a vehicle for increasing
awareness and partici- pation in the community.

The project is research based and work made from this research can be
shown in a group exhibition during their residency period. The Snehta
Athens based curator will collaborate closely with the artists and will cocurate
the final exhibition.
We ofer lodgings, a bedroom per artist and a studio per artist (for fees
see section 3.)
We ofer guidance and one-to-one support for the facilitation of each
project, including the acquisition of various resources requested whether
technical or otherwise. Artists must engage in a dialogue with the Snehta
team to request assistance.
Access to a wood workshop and a dark room.
We supply each artist with a tailored toolkit, which include sites of
possible interest, maps, art supply shops and useful contacts.
We encourage our artists to interact with other Athens-based
organisations and creative individuals. We ofer artists support to

We encourage, and support resident artists to have an open-studio and/
or an artist led talk event at the interim stage of their residency.
The progress and work produced by each artist will be promoted on our
website and our social media platforms (Facebook/Instagram) and
through our e-newsletter.
We can support our artists with letters of recommendation for funding
applications.
We aim to foster collaborations beyond the residency, and will support
returning artists as much as we can via our network.

Call For Vaa Nida Art Colony Residency Applications For 2017-2018 And The 7th Inter-Format Symposium Along Lines

The residency programme at Nida Art Colony of Vilnius Academy of Arts (NAC) is open for emerging and experienced artists, designers, architects, curators and researchers. NAC is the biggest art, residency and education venue in the Baltic region that provides the opportunity to live and work in the Curonian Spit National Park. Since 2011, when the A-I-R programme was launched, about 300 artists and other culture professionals have stayed at the Colony.

Professional workshops and support, well-equipped spaces, and artists’ community all year round. Artists and scholars who seek a quiet and spacious environment are welcome to experience a distinctive remote location and use the Colony’s new spaces. Production of art or design works is facilitated by new professional equipment. If you wish to organise an exhibition in Nida, Klaipeda, Kaunas and Vilnius, we can put you in touch with local galleries.

The atmosphere and life intensity d epends on the season and programme of the Colony. There are between 7 and 70 people staying at NAC at all times. In summer Nida becomes a busy (albeit not overcrowded) resort. Throughout September and partly May and June you will share the common spaces with art, architecture and design students and their professors. During August you will be accompanied by doctoral researchers and Nida Doctoral School. From October to April you will enjoy solitude, occasionally accented by art professionals or students arriving to the Colony for workshops.
Living and social conditions are provided to ensure a comfortable environment. Each of the five residencies occupies two floors with 65 square meters of floor space and is equipped with all the necessary facilities.

NAC call for Individual residency applications

Residencies between August 2017 and July 2018
Duration – one to four months (preferred from two months).
Grants and costs: No grants are currently a vailable; selected candidates are issued a letter of support for individual grant seeking. Studio and living space rent for selected residents costs 400€ per month, including all taxes, use of equipment, Wi-Fi, communal spaces and bicycles.
Educational opportunity: NAC encourages its residents to give a workshop at local high school or art school in September-December 2017 in exchange of the ~200 EUR fee.

Nida Doctoral School (NDS) residencies
for practice and theory based doctoral students

July-September 2017 (2 studios available for 1-2 months)
NDS is a non-degree doctoral program run together with Aalto University (Helsinki, FI).
NDS summer course. Selected doctoral residents are invited to join the intensive course on research methods and methodologies in the context of visual and performing arts, design and architecture on August 21-26, 2017.
Among tutors are: Dr Joanne Morra (Central Saint Martins, University of the Arts London ) and Dr Marquard Smith (Journal of Visual Culture and UCL Institute of Education). Full concept & application details.
Costs: The same conditions as for individual residencies apply, however selected doctoral residents are offered the summer course at no tuition fee as well as 5 ECTS credits.
