Over its many years, the International Biennial Exhibition of the Modern Exlibris has become one of the most distinct forms of activity engaged in by the Malbork Castle Museum. Ever since the first edition in 1963, it has been enjoying continued recognition of graphic artists from across the world, and of connoisseurs familiar and excited about this form of graphic art. Over the past 55 years, we have held 26 editions of this regular and unique artistic event, which has crowned the Malbork Castle as global centre of the artistic exlibris, all exhibitions organised to mark the occasion turning into events attracting large groups of visitors.

Each artist may submit up to 5 bookplates.

Only signed prints from printing plates made between 2017-2019 will be accepted.

Biennale of printmaking 2020

The Platform for the Promotion of Multi-original Art organises The Fourth International PrintMaking Biennial in Cacak, in 2020.
The Platform, as the coordinator of the Biennale, maintains the previous Biennale’s good practice of:
•identifying and following contemporary tendencies within the field of printmaking;
•endorsing medium expansion including use of modern methods of printing, contemporary technologies and theory concepts;
•promoting young authors and their work.
The Biennial aim is to provide regional and international artists with institutional support for their professional development, to induce and elevate interest in this artistic discipline among other artists and cultural workers, as well as a larger audience.


The competition is open to all professional artists, theoreticians and researchers, as well as final year undergraduate students of Faculties of fine and applied arts

No thematic restrictions

Each author is free to compete in one or more exhibition categories and program segments.
To apply for  the Biennale's main exhibition, authors can send:
• a maximum of 3 large-format artworks, up to 100 cm on the longer side, or
• a maximum of 5 small-f  ormat artworks, up to 30 cm on the longer side 

Artists are invited to apply with spatial and ambient installations, interventions in public space, videos filmed as segments of printmaking production or as an independent work based on the printmaking discipline character, objects, artists' books, works printed on various surfaces, or other work that represents
multi/interdisciplinary, hybrid, experimental, or discursive approach to printmaking.

For the additional Ex libris exhibition artists can apply with:
maximum 5 artworks no larger than 15x15cm

Special exhibition category of the Biennial is the exhibition of undergraduate students’ artwork. Final year
undergraduate students can apply for the competition with:
• a maximum of 3 large-format prints, longer side up to 100 cm, or
• a maximum of 5 small-format prints, longer side up to 30 cm

The competition is open to artists of all nationalities, without age restrictions.

The participants are divided into two age categories:

- Artists up to 18 years of age;

- Artists over 18 years of age.

The general topic of the 2019 competition is free but one of the main awards is intended for an entry with CHILDREN as topic.

Everyone living anywhere in the world and aged over 18 can submit his/her prints. Prints from woodcuts to digital prints and almost all types of fine graphic printmaking techniques are allowed.

4 only original small impressions from a set print run like bookplates or other types of prints are allowed.
All graphic printmaking techniques, also including mixed media printmaking techniques, original photographic and digital creations, capable of producing an edition of at least 5 equal impressions of good quality, are accepted.
Dimensions: The combined image and text of each print has to be limited to: 13 cm x 13 cm

1 Awards for technique: Town of Sint-Niklaas Awards for three different types of main techniques: 1.250 EUR. for each award.

2 Award for Young Talent: Victor Stuyvaert Award for a relief print of a participant under 30: 750 EUR.

Graphia Award for a child’s exlibris: 750 EUR.

The artwork must contain the text “EX LIBRIS – EX LIBERTAS”. Other signs, letters, words and texts, may also be included. Each copy must be signed and dated by the author.

The maximum size of the image is 130/130 mm and of the graphic sheet 150/210 mm.

Artists of any nationality may participate.

Works shall be unpublished.

The subject is free, and the technique is Woodcut. All techniques set out in the FISAE (International Federation of Ex - libris Societies) regulations concerning Woodcut are admitted (abbreviated X).

There are three categories:
- Children's engraving award (up to 12 years old)
- Young artists’ engraving award (aged 13 to 17)
- Adults’ engraving award

The minimal measurements of the woodblock are 7 x 8 cm, the maximum is 18 x 13 cm; the maximum measurements of the printing paper are 38 x 28 cm.

Each participant may present 1 unframed original work from a maximum of 5 original works

The International Exlibris Competition Varna is open for artists from all over the world, without limitation of education and occupation, aged 16 years or more, who accept its rules. There are no restrictions as to the themes or techniques used.

The work shall be printed on paper not larger than 290 mm x 210 mm; the image (engraved part) shall not exceed the size of 150 x 150 mm. The following words have to appear in all the works: “Ex libris”, “Bookplate” or some other similar expression (e.g. “From the library of...”), besides the name of the person or institution the work has been designed for. The bookplates are to have (under the image) the author’s signature, year of creation, technique and title (if the work has such), print number or “edition of author” abbreviation - E/A, A/P.

Participants are allowed to send maximum 5 (five) different bookplates, each of them in three signed copies. The works shall be created in the years 2014-2016. Art works presented in previous Exlibris Competition Varna shall not be accepted. The submitted art works will not be returned and will remain property of the graphic collection of the organizer of the event: Largo Art Gallery.

No limitations exist regarding the printmaking techniques. In addition to traditional printmaking techniques, computer designs shall also be accepted, providing that works of art are made in limited total print. Photocopies, drawings or sketches shall not be accepted.

The Guangzhou International Exlibris and Mini-prints Biennial has successfully held for three times, supported by artists around the world. Currently, the Biennial has become an influential academic brand. In order to enhance the communication among artists all over the world and to promote the development of exlibris and mini-prints, we decided to hold The 4th Guangzhou International Exlibris and Mini-prints Biennial in Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts in November 2016. We hope that more and more qualified and delicate works will be exhibited. This Biennial will include seminar and exchange activities on printing and exlibris and relative techniques. Thank you for your attention! We sincerely invite all the artists to take part in the exhibition and join the opening ceremony.


Participants ranging from artists all over the world to teachers and students in Academies of Fine Arts can submit exlibris or mini-prints to the exhibition.

The theme of this edition of Exlibris and Small Graphic Art Competition is “The Dreams of Gdańsk Neptune”, the god of the seas, sailors and fishermen. His figure is full of secrets, treasures hidden in the depths of the sea, and fascinating dreams…

Each artist can send an unlimited number of works that he himself made and whose theme is relevant to the theme of the competition. Only the works the have never been presented before can be sent.

The works will be evaluated in the following categories:
